From Hospital to Health: How Suhail Reversed His Type 2 Diabetes with Fusion IFM

“At the end of the day, you are the only person who can take care of your health and wellness. If you make better choices, you will live a better life.”

Suhail Naqvi

Family History of Type 2 Diabetes

Suhail Naqvi of Middlesex County, NJ, faced an increasingly difficult challenge managing his Type 2 diabetes over the years, including hospitalization in early 2024. His paternal side of the family was genetically predisposed to the condition.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) report that 38.4 million people in the US have type 2 diabetes, nearly 12% of the population. In addition, nearly 23% of adults with diabetes are currently unaware/undiagnosed.

Diagnosed 10 years ago, Suhail experienced cardiac issues and the emotional strain of managing the condition. The IT professional read about a UK cardiologist who explained that diabetes can be better managed by improving gut health. He recommended patients work with a Functional Medicine expert who specializes in gut health and is affiliated with The Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM).

Suhail, age 56, married with a young child, researched New Jersey Functional Medicine specialists and chose Fusion Integrative & Functional Medicine, headed by Jessica Miller, MD. He worked directly with Nurse Practitioner Alexandra Davidson, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, and Certified Functional Health Nutritionist and Health Coach Brianna Manginelli, MS, CNS, LDN, DSS.

Transitioning from Traditional Healthcare to Functional Medicine

“I knew from my first visit with the Fusion team that we would be dealing with my diabetes in a completely different direction,” Suhail recalls. “We focused on minimizing the acute issues that landed me in the hospital, worked to reverse my insulin resistance and instilled methods to overcome chronic stress.”

Suhail’s meetings with Fusion clinicians were in-depth one-hour sessions compared to the 20-minute office visits he had previously experienced with traditional healthcare. Simultaneously, he began nutrition sessions with Brianna. “I quickly learned I was eating well but was malnourished when it came to eating the right foods to overcome my insulin resistance.”

“Suhail had significantly improved his dietary choices with a whole-foods emphasis, but there were nutritional gaps that only fine-tuning through a Functional Medicine nutritional lens could provide,” explains Brianna.

“We optimized his body’s response to food, exercise, stress and sleep through continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and Oura-ring monitoring, a wearable device that monitors over 20 biometrics to track your health and wellness.”

Rapid and Unexpected Health Improvement

“My goal was to improve my overall health and reduce my diabetes symptoms by 2025,” Suhail explains. “I never expected my numbers to improve so much in just 12 weeks. I am still astonished.”
